Ugento
The original settlement of the ancient ‘Uxentum’ dates back to the Palaeolithic period; nowadays it appears as a tranquil town set back from the sea a little, with a medieval castle defending its citizens and traces of the ancient Messapian walls formed by mighty monolithic boulders placed one on top of another. A few minutes from Ugento, the coastline offers a fine range of beaches: Torre San Giovanni is the principal marina, with a scenic seafront promenade and the distinctive black and white check patterned lighthouse that was once a watchtower. The coast consists of a low cliff that slopes gently to the limpid waters. Further south, the Lido Marini and Torre Mozza marinas are adorned with splendid broad sandy beaches.
