SALENTO
Some people say that it starts close to Egnazia, where the ancient Messapic ruins
are washed by the ocean waves, while others maintain that it starts close to Ostuni
and still others that the start of the Salento lies even further down. But what does it matter? The important things is that we are in the Salento.
Everywhere there are traces of history which tell of age-old eras, from the menhir of the Baroque city to the poor homes that belonged to the servants who worked for the feudal lords.
Pasolini’s words come to mind: "I fly to the least known of Italy’s coasts, I am pulled along by such joys to be seen that I am almost blind. In fact here everything threatens to not be: the flat coast, the Arab-Norman towns, the sea. Everything is as if steeped and stultified by the light".
