THE TRULLI AND THE MASSERIE

The Salento is a karstic limestone land made up of rocks and stones, and of a peasant population that has long toiled with changing these hard stones into generous harvests. Removing stones and rocks from vast areas has resulted in many areas of reclaimed land, the materials themselves being used for stone walls and “pajare,” small stone refuges. Long tortuous dry walls divide form boundaries both for the “pajare” and the “furnieddhi” which are typical rural buildings used for sleeping, storing utensils, keeping water cool during the torrid summer months and seeking refuge during the bitterly cold winters.
