TOWERS AND CASTLES
Ths story of the Salento’s castles dates back to the Late Middle Ages, conceived as tools of defence of Christianity it was in the 17th century that they became defence systems for controlling the surrounding area as well as prestigious icons for the aristocratic class. The towers also had defensive functions and today there are some 60 towers still standing in the Salento, along both the Ionic and Adriatic seaboards.
