GREEK SALENTO
There are ten towns in the so-called Greek Salento: Calimera, Carpignano Salentino, Castrignano de’ Greci, Corigliano d’Otranto, Cutrofiano, Martano, Martignano, Sternatia, Soleto, Zollino.
Ten towns linked by history and traditions and identified with the ancient legend of the 'pizzica' music which tells of the imaginary bite of the dangerous and poisonous tarantula spider. Tradition would have it that in order to save the victim, almost always a woman, the drums have to be played incessantly accompanied by an obsessive, repetitive dance which beats the poison and finally kills the spider.
These “tarantate” legends are part of the story of the Salento, the story of a past which is not all that far away.
