THE TRULLI AND THE MASSERIE
The trulli are concrete examples of man’s toil and art. Their name changed down the centuries (truddhi, furnieddhi, pajare and so on) as these whitewashed prisms evolved. In olden days they were peasant homes, today they are exceptional sculptural elements that stand out against the strong brown colours of the Salento countryside.
And then there is the magic of the masserie manor farms, which date back to the 16th century, were built for the owners of large landed estates and were fortified much like military outposts. They are the recognisable symbol of the rapport between man, work and production and are typical and very handsome and typical elements in rural Apulia.
